The meta keyword tag includes a list of keywords or phrases, separated by commas that represent the subject matter of a particular web page.
In the early 1990’s the less sophisticated algorithms of the search engines used the keyword tags to rank sites. Eventually everyone figured this out and exploited the system to try and rank high for terms like “Pamela Anderson” when there was no relationship between the actress and the website.
Nowadays, the search engines give little attention to the meta keyword tags. Even though it may not help you rank higher, to play it safe, you should optimize all meta keywords for each page of your website. You never know if the importance of keyword tags will change in the future.
For each page of your website, create a list of 10 or 15 keywords or phrases and include them in your meta keyword tag. Make sure you have unique meta keyword tags for each page of your web site and do not repeat keywords or phrases across pages.
The meta keyword tag is located in the header of an HTML document, and it appears as follows:
<HEAD>
<META NAME=”keywords” CONTENT=“list your keywords for each
page here separated by commas”>
</HEAD>
Steps to Optimize Meta Keyword Tags:
1. Open a web page in the text editor and find the <HEAD> tag.
2. After <HEAD> and before </HEAD> tags, type <META
NAME=“keywords” CONTENT=” followed by your keyword and keyword phrases separated by commas.
3. Save the file, and upload to your web server.
4. To verify that the keywords are placed correctly, go to your website, click on “page” and “view source.” Look for the meta keywords tag and look at the keywords you entered.
<meta name=”Keywords” content=”Palm Beach SEO, Palm Beach Adwords, Palm Beach Internet Marketing, Pay-Per-Click, pay per click, Optimization, Interactive, ROI, Website Conversion, Website design, website design and development, Palm Beach Internet Marketing, Palm Beach Paid Search, Conversion tools, Google Adwords Professional, Adwords Professional, SEO, Internet Advertising” />
Instead of using commas you can use “|” (without the quotation marks) in between the words.
